homemade paste and glue recipes

Creating homemade paste and glue is simple and fun! Have your child help you with the following glue and paste recipes. Choose the one that best suits your project. For variety, add food coloring before using. Store all glues and pastes in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

No Cook Paste

handful flour
water (a little at a time) until gooey

It should be quite thick so it won't run all over the place/paper. Great for pasting scraps of paper old Christmas cards, its not to sticky

Glue recipe

3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 teaspoons white vinegar
1/2 cup cornstarch
3/4 cup cold water

Mix water, syrup and vinegar in small saucepan. Bring to a rolling boil. In small bowl, mix cornstarch and cold water. Add this mixture slowly to first mixture. Stir constantly. Let stand overnight before using.

Library Paste recipe

1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon alum
4 cups water
Oil of cloves

Mix all ingredients in saucepan and cook until clear and thick. Add 3 drops oil of cloves and store covered.

Tried and True Glue recipe

This is the old standby paste - very sticky - that is absolutely safe for children to make and use.

3 tablespoons cornstarch
4 tablespoons cold water
2 cups boiling water
Squeeze-type container

Mix the cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl and then pour the paste into the boiling water, stirring constantly. When liquid is clear and thick, remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a plastic squeeze container and label.

Colored Glue recipe

Elmer's Glue or white craft glue
Food coloring

Use a bowl to mix glue and food coloring together. Return glue to its original container.

Note Store all paste and glue in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
