For authentic Chinese flavor try these five spice powder recipes


This authentic Chinese five spice powder encompasses all five flavors - sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, and salty. This traditional blend is based on the Chinese philosophy of balancing the yin and yang in food. A pinch goes a long. way.

Easy Five Spice Powder


1 Tbsp. black pepper
1 Tbsp. ground anise
1 Tbsp. ground fennel seed
1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves

Mix and store in an airtight jar
 

Gourmet Five Spice Powder

2 tablespoons ground star anise
2 tablespoons ground fennel seeds
2 teaspoons crushed cassia
2 teaspoons crushed Szechwan peppercorns
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Mix and store in an airtight jar
 

Chinese Five Spice Marinade
If you want to add Chinese flavors to anything you're grilling, then this is a great marinade. Make this marinade a day in advance to get the most out of the flavors. It's perfect of beef and poultry.

2/3 cup minced green onions
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup dry sherry
2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger

2 tablespoons chili oil
2 teaspoons oriental sesame oil
2 teaspoons homemade five-spice powder

Combine all ingredients and well well. Great on beef or poultry. Make a day in advance to enhance flavors but this one shouldn't be stored too long.
